Why sheet count is perimeter × height, then ceil
Why we hang from perimeter, not from floor area
Walls are , minus openings. The ceiling, if you hang it, is length × width — a different rectangle. Adding them and dividing by sheet area, then taking ceil, is the takeoff. Using floor area alone misses every wall. Using a “room factor” that already includes a waste percent, then moving this page’s waste slider, double-counts scrap.
Openings are deducted once. A 3-0 door is about 21 square feet, not a full sheet, because you still hang above the head and you still have waste from the cut. Over-deducting every opening down to zero is how a room ships two sheets short.
This model is one rectangular room. A hallway, a closet, or a stair well is another perimeter. Type X and regular board are the same square footage; the code changes which product you buy, not how many sheets cover the studs. Two-layer listed walls are two takeoffs with staggered joints, not “twice the mud on one layer.”
Worked field example
16 × 13 room, 9-foot ceiling, hang the ceiling, 4×12 sheets, one 3-0 door and one 3 × 4 window (33 sf openings). Not the 20 × 14 / 4×8 default.
Perimeter is 2 × (16 + 13) = 58 feet. Walls are 58 × 9 − 33 = 489 square feet. Ceiling is 16 × 13 = 208. Net 697. A 4×12 is 48 square feet, so 697 ÷ 48 = 14.52, which ceils to 15 sheets net. Ten percent waste ceils to 17. The same room on 4×8 (32 sf) is 22 net and 25 with waste — more seams, more mud, easier to carry up a stair.
Horizontal hang on 9-foot walls wants 4×10 or a 54-inch plus a 54-inch rip, not three 4×8s stacked. Sheet size is a labor choice as much as a count.
Type X is a product call, not a sheet-count change
IRC R302.6 is the garage-to-house separation most residential hangers hit. It asks for 1/2-inch regular or 5/8-inch Type X on the garage side, depending on the adopted edition and the wall assembly. This tool does not pick the assembly. It only counts sf.

Where the field usually goes wrong
Over-deducting openings is the first miss. A window still needs board on three sides and a header strip. Deduct the glass, not the stud bay to the ceiling. The second miss is treating the house as one 16 × 13 box. Closets, the garage separation, and a stair well are extra perimeters. Cathedral ceilings are not L × W.
Mud, tape, and screw counts on this page are industry factors on the hung sf. They assume a standard three-coat finish, not a Level 5 or a skim on plaster. Do not also run the waste-factor tool on the same sheets — the slider here already covers cut-off. A garage separation that needs Type X is the same square footage as regular board; only the stamp on the panel changes.
Frequently asked questions
Do I subtract every door and window at full sheet size?
No. Subtract the opening area. You still hang above the head. Full-sheet deductions starve the room.
4×8 or 4×12 — which should I order?
4×12: fewer butts, two-person lift. 4×8: stairs and one-person carry. See the table above.
Does Type X change the sheet count?
Not the square footage. R302.6 changes which board you buy. A second listed layer is a second takeoff.
Is this one room or the whole house?
One rectangle. Add rooms. A hallway is its own perimeter.
Should I hang the ceiling in this count?
If you hang it, leave the box checked. Ceiling is L × W; openings are deducted from walls only.
Can I use the waste-factor tool on these sheets too?

Do mud and screw numbers include Level 5?
No. They are a standard hang-and-tape factor. Level 5 needs its own mud line.
