Why waste is added, not invented as a code section

Why gross=net×(1+base+diag+cx)\text{gross} = \text{net} \times (1 + \text{base} + \text{diag} + \text{cx})

Net is what you measured. Gross is what you buy. The difference is cuts, breakage, and pattern. This page adds a base percent for the material, then extra if the layout is diagonal or herringbone, then extra if the room is an L or a hallway cluster. The extras are added, then applied once: gross=net×(1+sum)\text{gross} = \text{net} \times (1 + \text{sum}). That is a contractor habit, not an IRC table. There is no code section for “10 percent tile waste.”

Other BuildCalc tools already have their own waste sliders — concrete, brick, drywall, roofing, rebar, rafters. Those sliders are the waste for that takeoff. Do not run this page on those results and multiply again. Use this page when the other tool does not exist for that material (tile, hardwood, siding) or when you want a second opinion on a net quantity you measured by hand.

Diagonal tile is not “more area.” The floor is the same square feet. You lose the triangles at every wall. Herringbone loses more than a 45-degree dump. The +5 percent here is a herringbone/diagonal bump for tile, not a new floor area.

Worked field example

420 square feet of porcelain, herringbone, L-shaped kitchen/dining. Not the 500 sf straight-lay default.

Tile base is 10 percent. Herringbone adds 5. The L adds 5. Waste is 20 percent. Gross is 420 × 1.20 = 504 square feet. That is 84 extra feet for cuts, not a 504-foot floor. If the same 420 had already been punched through a supplier worksheet that includes 15 percent, do not add this 20 on top.

Large-format tile (12×24 and up) often wants the high end of that band even on a straight lay, because a single miscut is a whole board. This page does not bump for format — raise the category or add a line if the tile is that large.

Where the field usually goes wrong

Stacking waste is the expensive miss. A drywall count that already includes 10 percent, then this page at 15, is 26.5 percent scrap on paper and a truck of leftover board. The same applies to brick, concrete yards, and roofing squares.

The other miss is treating waste as a change in the measured net. The floor is still 420. You are buying 504. Attic stock and future repairs are a separate owner decision — this page will not add a “attic box” unless you raise net by hand. Dye lots on tile and hardwood argue for buying the extra now; that is still the same percent, not a second category.

Is there a code that requires 10 percent waste?

No. These percents are buying habits so you finish the room without a second dye lot.

Should I run this on drywall, brick, or roofing squares?

No. Those tools already have waste sliders. Use this page for tile, hardwood, siding, or a net you measured by hand.

Does herringbone add floor area?

No. The room is still 420 sf. The +5 percent is extra material for triangles at the walls.

What counts as a complex room?

An L, a U, angled walls, or a hallway that breaks the rectangle. A closet on a square room is usually still base percent.

Why is hardwood’s diagonal bump higher than tile’s?

Board flooring wastes more on a 45 because of end-match. These are engine defaults, not a mill spec.

Should I keep leftover for repairs?

Often yes for dye lot. Raise net by hand if you want an attic box. Do not invent a code line for it.

Can I enter a custom percent?

The form uses category plus the two checkboxes. If a supplier mandates 15 on large-format, raise net or category by hand.
