Why a square is footprint × pitch × complexity × waste, then ÷ 100
Why you cannot order from the floor plan alone
A roofing square is 100 square feet of roof surface, not of floor. The surface is larger than the footprint because the plane is sloped. You take the ground rectangle including overhangs, multiply by the pitch factor , then by a complexity factor for hips or valleys, then by waste, then divide by 100. Ordering the first-floor area as “squares” leaves the crew short on the first pallet.
Complexity and waste are different knobs. Hip (+5% here) and valleys (+15%) approximate extra plane and extra cuts that a rectangle misses. The waste slider is leftover and starter/ridge packing. Turning both up for the same valley double- counts. A simple gable with 10 percent waste is enough for most rectangular houses; a cut-up ranch wants the valley factor or a measured takeoff, not both at 20 percent.

The gable-area figure on that page is two common planes. A hip has four planes and two extra hips of cap. Use this takeoff for the order, that page for the commons.
Worked field example
44 × 28 foot hip roof, 8:12, 12-inch overhang, 10 percent waste. Not the 40 × 30 / 6:12 gable default.
Footprint with eaves is 46 × 30 = 1,380 square feet. 8:12 multiplier is 1.2019, so slope area is 1,659. Hip complexity 1.05 takes that to 1,742. Ten percent waste is 1,916 square feet, or 19.16 squares — about 58 bundles at 3 per square, plus ridge/hip cap along the 46-foot ridge and the four hips, which this page only approximates as a ridge length.
If you had ordered 44 × 28 ÷ 100 = 12.3 squares, you would have been seven squares short before anyone cut a valley. That miss is the floor-plan order, not a bad multiplier.
A square is a trade unit, not an IRC section
The IRC does not define a square. Covering slope limits live on the rafter page (R905). This table is packaging and the two factors this engine applies, so you do not treat them as code.

Where the field usually goes wrong
Ordering the footprint is the first miss. The second is stacking complexity and waste for the same cut-up roof until the ticket is 40 percent over and the leftover sits in the driveway. Pick one: a measured plane takeoff, or the valley factor plus a modest waste, not both at the top of the slider.
Dormers, a wraparound porch, and a detached garage are extra footprints. This model is one rectangle. Add each plane or you will short the order by the porch and the doghouse. Starter and ridge caps are linear; converting them into more field squares double-counts. Underlayment here assumes a 400 sf synthetic roll. Number 15 felt covers less after lap — do not use the 4-square roll count for felt. Ice-and-water at eaves is a lineal strip, not another full-roof square.
Frequently asked questions
Why can’t I order squares from the floor area?
The roof is sloped and has eaves. A 44 × 28 hip at 8:12 is about 19 squares with waste, not 12.
Do I add hip complexity and waste together?
They multiply, but they answer different questions. Complexity is missing plane; waste is cuts. Do not also run the waste-factor tool on the same squares.

Is every shingle three bundles per square?
Most architectural bundles are. Some designer products are four. The wrapper wins.
Does this count valleys and step flashing?
The valley factor fattens field area. Metal valley and ice-and-water are separate lineal takeoffs.
What about a second layer over old shingles?
This is a tear-off or new-deck count. It is not permission to overlay.
Can I use the waste-factor tool on these squares?
No. The slider on this page is the waste. Stacking the other tool double-counts.
